This project studies and visualises the information stored in the frozen ground of the Arctic before it transforms and disappears forever. It is a place that’s often seen as inhospitable. Yet this frozen archive underneath the tundra contains a wealth of bacteria that have been trapped in ice for thousands of years.
As the Arctic warms up, public attention is largely focussed on the melting sea ice. But scientists are also observing major changes on the thawing land as long-dormant bacteria awaken, unlocking and releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
