Gravity Claze Series

This project explores how post-digital artisanship can unpack technology from a crafts perspective. Using a 3D ceramic printer it investigates the exacting properties of the machine vs an unpredictable material. Different mixtures of clay will reproduce different digital designs, but the outcomes vary due to the uncertain layers and geometry of expanding clay.

The journey from the digital to physical then continues in the kiln as the homemade expanding clay melts and organically reshapes archetypical forms. The risk of failure inherent to craftsmanship is brought into the world of digital manufacturing through the uncertain nature of materials: exploring the soft space of materiality between design and happy accidents.

Claze is a portmanteau, a combination of the words clay and glaze.

Materials: Porcelain and expanding clay body
